Production Technology of Pear (Pyrus spp.):

  • Climatic and Soil Requirements:
    • Wide climatic adaptability.
    • Chilling requirement: About 1200 hours below 7°C.
    • Soil: Deep, well-drained, fertile, medium textured clayey loam; pH 6.0-7.5.
  • Varieties:
    • Bartlett/William’s Pear: Requires 1500 hrs chilling, ovate pyriform fruit.
    • Anjou: Resistant to low temperature and fire blight, large fruit.
    • Flemish Beauty: Large obovate fruit, pure white and juicy flesh.
  • Propagation and Planting:
    • Propagation: Shield or ‘T’ budding, whip and tongue grafting.
    • Spacing: Initial 3 M x 2 M, changing to 6 M x 4M after 4-5 years.
  • Training and Pruning:
    • Systems: Pine shaped, pyramid, spindle, palmette, trellis.
    • Pear bears fruit bud on two-year-old wood and spurs.
